November 29, 2016 — With another appointment of a far right conservative to HHS Secretary, Donald Trump has shown ambivalence, at best, towards medical marijuana and definitely shows no sign of supporting recreational cannabis.

Georgia Representative Tom Price (R), also an orthopedic surgeon, is being lauded as a great pick for Secretary of Health and Human Services by many fellow Republicans. Democrats have little reason to oppose him on his experience or his issues, and he will likely be easily confirmed.

The cabinet position is a key appointment concerning the continuing battle against cannabis prohibition and rescheduling of the medically valuable plant. The Secretary of Health and Human Services is integral in the proper reclassification under the Controlled Substances Act, where cannabis is still listed as having no medical value and a high incidence of addiction.

Rep. Price has a D voting record from NORML concerning cannabis, and voted no on the Veterans Equal Access Amendment (2016), the McClintock/Polis Amendment (2015), the Rohrabacher/Farr Amendment (2015), and the Veterans Equal Access Amend-

ment (2015). They also gave him an overall score of 0%, which indicates he “opposes all forms of marijuana decriminalization.”

Ballotpedia lists him as favoring the “never legalize marijuana” stance. OnTheIssues.org shows him to be an extremist on most issues. He is opposed to green technology spending, gay marriage, and supports prayer in school, expanding the military, and a woman’s right to choose. None of his extreme conservative positions bode well for cannabis legalization, medical or otherwise.

Recent arguments that “the train has left the station”, or “the cat is out of the bag” in terms of cannabis legalization are amazingly naïve. Those saying such things had better check who those new leaders in Washington are, since they set the agenda. It certainly appears that Trump is doing everything he can to make it hard to finally end cannabis prohibition, and he doesn’t really care. Anyone who thinks a President Donald Trump is good for the cannabis legalization movement is fooling themselves and not well informed.
