Men are from Mars and women are from Venus.
Whoever wrote that was probably high enough to think that they were actually on another planet.
However, the reality is that men and women are different when it comes to the effects of cannabis. This has been tested in both male and female lab animals as well as in humans.
Some differences come from development and are irreversible. Other differences are based on sex hormones such as estrogen and may vary throughout a female’s monthly cycle. One example of this is the effect of estrogen on the munchies.
Here are some cases where males and females differ when it comes to THC:
Cannabis causes slight hypothermia, but this effect is stronger in males. Don’t forget to bring a jacket if you are lighting up outside, guys!
Estrogen can reduce the hunger-stimulating effects of THC. This means that guys will get the munchies more than girls. Make sure that you have the keys nearby for that Taco Bell run!
Although cannabinoids are able to reduce pain in many cases, they work better for females than males.
For reasons that are currently not understood, women are more susceptible to getting dizzy after smoking weed.
Gastric motility is the rate of movement through the GI tract. Because cannabis can slow gastric motility, it has traditionally been used as a treatment for diarrhea.
This also has implications for how long it takes for edibles to kick in. As THC is absorbed, it may then slow emptying of the stomach – which leads to slower absorption of the rest of the THC. Because this effect is stronger in females, they may take longer to fully absorb the THC in edibles.
There have been many conflicting studies in this area. However, the totality of evidence in animals and humans suggests that THC has an overall positive effect on female arousal and a net negative effect on male sexual motivation and arousal.
Men and women are not affected by cannabis in the same way. This infographic will show you exactly what the differences are between the sexes:
