Texas Legislator Files Medical Marijuana Bill For Special Session

July 10th was the first day to file bills for Texas’ upcoming Special Session, and one Texas State Senator wasted no time in filing a medical cannabis bill. Texas deserves a comprehensive medical cannabis law. Texas does not have a citizen initiative process, so the only way to legalize a real medical marijuana program is via the Texas Legislature for better or worse. Below is a message that Texas State Senator Eddie Lucio III posted on Facebook about the bill he introduced (the bill can be read at this link here):
Friends: Today marks the first day of filing bills for the Special Session. You’ll see several offices filing bills, some of them germane to the topics that the Governor added to the call and some that are not. My staff and I are ready to consider and vote on all bills during this Special Session. But I believe there are just as important items that must be addressed in our state, so important that I too have filed a bill crucial to so many people across the state and across our nation.
As of today, I have filed house bill 85 “relating to authorizing the possession, use, cultivation, distribution, transportation, and delviery of medical cannabis for medical use by patients with certain debilitating medical conditions and the licensing of dispensing organizations and cannabis testing facilities”. In other words, I have re-filed HB 2107, the same bill I filed during the regular session.
I am hopeful that the leadership and the Governor genuinely considers the immediate need of medical cannabis for medical use. I will do my part and ask our Governor to add this item to the call this Special Session and I urge you and I encourage you to do the same. I will continue pushing this bill and will continue to work hard to pass this legislation and won’t stop until it becomes law.
